What do you think of mandatory Helmets For Motorcycles?
Should the government make it law that to ride a motorcycle on a public road you must wear a Helmet, or should it be up to the individual?
As the old saying goes, “LET THOSE WHO RIDE DECIDE.”
I see both the pros and cons of wearing/not wearing a helmet.
On the pro side, helmets will protect you UP TO A CERTAIN POINT if you’re involved in an accident. An impact on concrete or asphalt at 25 MPH is more than enough to kill you, and a helmet will certainly save your noggin in that case; on the other hand, if you T-bone a car doing 85 MPH+, nothing in the world is going to save you.
And yes, helmet usage does save the taxpayers money in health care, although not as much as one would think. Not enough for me to cite that as a primary reason or go out and buy a helmet, anyway.
On the con side, helmets have a tendency to give a certain part of the motorcycle riding community (the ones doing 85 MPH+ that I spoke of earlier) a false sense of security and safety, encouraging them to do stupid things that eventually turn them into organ donors, helmet or no. Helmets are also VERY hot in the summertime, especially if you’re wearing a full face. While you’re in the breeze it’s not that bad, but once you hit stop and go traffic, it’s murder.
I am vehemently opposed to the federal government or the state government regulating my life and taking away my choices; therefore, I am vehemently opposed to mandatory helmet laws. (No, I’m not in ABATE but only because I haven’t gotten around to it yet.)
So the big question is, do I personally wear a helmet when I ride? I live in a state which does NOT have a mandatory “lid law,” so I can choose to wear one or not. 90% of the time I wear one, because I feel better with a skid lid on. (I’m not worried about the high-speed crash on the highway; it’s the little old lady turning left in front of me at 25 MPH that I’m leery of!) The other ten percent of the time I just tie on a do-rag and hit the road.
